We live in a very image based society. Between the dating apps, social media influencers and entertainment, we are bombarded with images of seemingly perfect people.
• However, these perfect images are, in fact, imperfect in every way. Most of the time there are several takes, lots of beauty enhancers and filters and set up situations.
• Is image important? Of course, it is but not every image has to be perfect and we should not compare ourselves to others.
• Embracing imperfections means saying, as Brene Brown wrote: “I am imperfect, vulnerable & sometimes afraid, but that doesn’t change the truth that I am also brave and worthy of love and belonging.”
• We are all worthy of love and belonging and we are each unique. We may each have something we hate about ourselves but that does not make us unworthy.
• For many, sadly, they internalize this lack of self-worth and it affects every aspect of their life especially social and romantic. I can speak from personal experience. It is something I struggled with most of my life. I still do sometimes, but I remind myself where I am at is not where I was and I keep moving forward.
• I am flawed as is each one of you but there is so much beauty in that flaw.
• Leonard Cohen wrote that “There’s a crack in everything; that’s how the light gets in.”
• You have probably heard of “Kintsugi” - the Japanese art of putting broken pottery pieces back together with gold. Essentially, it is based on embracing flaws and imperfections and making it stronger in the process, highlighting, instead of hiding scars.
• You too can create perfection from imperfection and something unique, beautiful and strong – accepting what you perceive as your flaws - and, as a result stand out from the crowd as the amazing person that you are – making you a much more magnetic and attractive person in all aspects of your life.
• TRY THIS: Visualize filling in all your imperfections with gold and reflect on how this newfound strength can help others.
• POST IT NOTE: I am perfectly imperfect
